Horse Powered Reading
Horse Powered Reading is a hands-on, equine-assisted reading program that integrates interactive horse activities with structured reading instruction. When you practice reading with horses, it helps students build reading skills, confidence, and critical thinking through interactive experiences with horses.
If working with a reading tutor has not helped, this unique approach engages students in a dynamic way, making reading more accessible and enjoyable. By incorporating movement, emotional connections, and multisensory learning, Horse Powered Reading can help students overcome reading challenges in ways traditional tutoring may not.
This equine-assisted literacy program is particularly effective for children who struggle with reading, as well as those with special needs, anxiety, ADHD, or autism.

How Horse-Powered Reading Works

-
Participants read aloud to a horse in a calm, non-judgmental environment where the horse's presence provides emotional support and comfort.
-
Horses are known for their gentle nature and ability to create a relaxed atmosphere, which can help children feel less self-conscious or anxious about reading aloud.
-
The process involves building a bond with the horse, which in turn can boost the reader’s confidence, reduce anxiety, and help with focus.
-
Sometimes, the activities are also combined with equine-related themes or stories, adding a thematic element to the learning.
Benefits of Equine-Assisted Reading Program
-
Reduces anxiety: Horses can help calm students who are nervous about reading aloud in front of others.
-
Increases confidence: Kids may feel more comfortable reading to a horse than a person, making it a positive experience that builds self-esteem.
-
Promotes engagement: The novelty and excitement of reading to a horse can make students more motivated to practice their reading.
-
Improves focus: The calming effect of horses can help kids focus better, particularly those with attention challenges like ADHD.
-
Enhances emotional connection: The bond formed with the horse may help foster better emotional regulation and social-emotional learning.
-
Whole-body learning: Engaging your child's kinesthetic and sensory learning styles, significantly enhances their ability to retain essential academic skills. Essentially, your child is actively seeing, touching, and interacting with the material in a way that stimulates multiple areas of the brain.

ADHD-Friendly Reading Program
Horse Powered Reading helps students with ADHD by combining movement, hands-on learning, and real-world feedback to improve focus and retention. Interacting with horses strengthens self-regulation, impulse control, and engagement, making reading concepts more tangible and enjoyable.

Horse Powered Reading
Horse Powered Reading, created by Dr. Michele Pickel in 2012, is a unique, research-backed curriculum that combines equine-assisted learning with proven educational strategies. Dr. Pickel incorporated the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model to create a program that engages your child’s mind, body, and emotions.
